Interlibrary Loans: Getting Started

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery at MTA Libraries

Update on ILL Services during Covid-19 Closure

Mount Allison is offering limited interlibrary loan service of electronic items only.

What does that mean for any requests I have pending in the system?

Requests for books currently in the system will remain there and will go unfilled until such a time that services can resume.  At that time, staff will be contacting each requestor to check to see if each item is still required.

Requests for journal articles may go unfilled, depending on the services provided at the lending institutions. We will do our best to get you the articles you need.

I currently have books on loan that are at, near or past their due date, what should I do?

For items that have already been picked up and might be coming due soon or are past due, hang onto them until it is prudent and safe to return them. Further to this, we are working with our ILL software vendor to suspend the production of overdue notices in order to encourage everyone to keep practising social distancing and/or social isolation.  Interlibrary loans are not subject to overdue fines and this practice will continue.

I received an email notice that a book I ordered through ILL has arrived and is available to pick up but I haven't yet picked it up, what should I do?

Loans you haven't picked up yet, and for which you have been notified via email, will be kept for a minimum of six weeks from your date of email notice.

Getting Started

Novanet Express or Interlibrary Loan (ILL), which is right for me?

Novanet Express (NE)

Novanet Express is a service developed and used by Novanet member libraries to allow them to share books and other items with each other. If you see a book in the Novanet library catalogue that is available at another Novanet institution it can be delivered to you quickly for free!

Books or other physical items can be delivered to the Novanet library of your choice.

Delivery time is typically 3-5 business days. When your item arrives, you will receive a notice in your Mount Allison University email to pick up your item at the Library. Items are held for 7 days from delivery.

For more information on requesting through Novanet Express, click here.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan is normally for items not currently available at Mount Allison Libraries or at other Novanet Libraries. Items are requested using the Interlibrary Loan request form.  These requests are tracked by the Interlibrary Loan staff through the Interlibrary Loan system. When returnable items (e.g., books) arrive, you will be notified by email.

PLEASE NOTE: Interlibrary Loan items usually have a short-term loan period, do not get signed out to your Novanet account, and cannot be renewed through the Novanet system. They must be returned to a Mount Allison University Library.  For more information see Interlibrary Loan FAQ

Relais-In-Transit (RIT)

These items are those which you requested using the ILL request form but which are supplied by a Novanet library. You will receive notice of their arrival via email. You pick them up from the Mount Allison Library and they get signed out to your Novanet account.  They are tracked through the Novanet circulation system. Novanet borrowing, renewal and overdue policies apply to them. They can be returned at any Novanet library.

Service Notice - PINS

Having problems logging into the Interlibrary Loan form?  Your PIN likely needs to be re-set. Please e-mail nbsam@mta.ca or contact the Circulation Desk (364-2568).
