Phishing scam targets library users

The message tells patrons their library account is expiring and asks them to click a fraudulent link to keep their access to all online library services. (See an example of the phishing attempt below.)

Please do not click the links in this message or reply to it. The Libraries & Archives did not send this message. We will never send you e-mail messages asking you to click links to renew your library account.

Please visit Access Services with any questions about your account or to have your library PIN re-set.

If you have received the phishing attempt below and have clicked the links, please change your Mount Allison password immediately and contact the Computing Services helpdesk at helpdesk[at]mta.ca.

 

Example of fraudulent e-mail:

From: University Libraries <[fake e-mail address]>
Sent: Sunday, December 1, 2019 6:05:05 AM
To: [student name]
Subject: Library Services

Dear Library User,
Please be informed that your access to Mount Allison University Libraries System will expire soon. Your library enrollment "[your user name]" is set to expire on December 15, 2019 12:00, so this is a notification for you to renew now. To renew, simply click on the following link:

University Libraries [fraudulent link]

You will not be required to provide any identity information during this renewal process.

The above renewal link is only valid for a limited time. If you fail to renew your library enrollment before then, you will lose access to all library online services. For a list of the current library online services, please visit:
