Copyright Guide: Alternatives to Copyright

Alternatives to Copyright

Terms such as "public domain", "open access", "creative commons", "openly accessible", "copyleft", and "royalty-free" are often noted on works. Some of these are used interchangeable but they are not synonymous. A quick definition of these terms:

Public Domain:

  • Items not under, or no longer under, copyright protection
  • These can be copied, distributed, printed, etc. without seeking permissions

Open Access:

  • Research distributed online free of cost or other access barriers (eg. no paywall)
  • These can be read, downloaded, copied, distributed, printed, link to, etc.

Creative Commons:

  • Resources offered with certain usage rights for the public but with other rights reserved for the creators and other rights holders
  • Licences vary, from fairly restrictive with most rights reserved to completely open access

Openly Accessible:

  • Many resources are openly accessible due to the very nature of the internet itself
  • These might not be free from copyright protection or released with any open use provisions

Copyleft:

  • General licence agreement granted by a copyright owner permitting anyone to freely use copyrighted property but under specific terms, particularly that the materials will benefit others for educational or cultural purposes

Royalty Free:

  • User has the right to use the work with a one-time payment to the licensor
  • There may still be restrictions on use
