Welcome Susan Duke: Access Services Assistant

by Laura Landon on 2018-11-08T14:48:13-04:00 | 0 Comments

Susan DukeWorking in a library by far beats working in a bank, laughs Susan Duke, one of the newest members of the R.P. Bell Library’s Access Services team.

“Libraries combine my interests with a career,” says Susan, who after more than two decades in the banking industry chose a new career in libraries. “I liked to read. And banking was too stressful!”

In 2009, Susan left the Royal Bank of Canada for the Peace River Municipal Library system, where she spent just under four years as an Access Services and Interlibrary Loans assistant. Following that, she ran a large high school library in Peace River for a year.

A recent move to New Brunswick brought her to the Mount Allison Libraries & Archives, where she began work as an Access Services Assistant in September.

"I'm surprised by how busy it is," she says. "And I like how the public can come in and use it. It's a welcoming space and i am enjoying my time here so far. I like all the nooks people can disappear into."

After spending most of her life in Ontario and Alberta, she says she is also enjoying New Brunswick, where nature abounds and property is affordable. Susan lives on three acres in Shemogue, where she walks her three dogs on the beach every day.

So what's attractive about libraries?

"I like helping people," she says, echoing most people who choose a career in libraries. "I like it when they bring a problem to me and I can solve it."
