Jason joined the library Nov. 7 as our new Interlibrary Loans Coordinator. With more than 10 years’ experience as an interlibrary loans technician at Medicine Hat College, Jason is a seasoned library pro. He also has eight years’ experience as an intellectual property officer at both Medicine Hat College and Dalhousie University.
What draws him to interlibrary loans?
“No two days are ever the same. It’s the thrill of the hunt. It’s providing the information to people that they don’t necessarily know where to find easily on their own, or have a way to access it.”
Interlibrary Loans, located within the Access Services department, gives the Mount A community access to library collections worldwide. It also provides libraries around the world with access to our unique collection. The library fills around 1,300 requests each year for Mount Allison patrons, and shares more than 1,600 items from our collection each year with other libraries.
“It’s a smaller part in the larger library role,” notes Jason, who says he enjoys filling the interlibrary loans role within academic libraries, where the job is never dull.
“There’s a certain energy and buzz on academic campuses, and it’s usually centred around the library. The library is often the heart of the institution. It’s so many different things to so many people.”
Jason is a Library Technician who also holds a B.A. in History from Dalhousie University, where he recently served on the university’s Library Council and its Copyright Advisory Committee. At Medicine Hat College he was active on the library’s committees on marketing, social events, and technology, winning the College’s 2008 Innovation Award.
For the past three years, Jason served as Dalhousie’s intellectual property officer. In that capacity, he provided support to staff and faculty regarding copyright issues, created and maintained the Copyright Office’s web pages, gave presentations on copyright, and more. He also chaired the Council of Atlantic University Libraries (CAUL) Copyright Committee from 2012-2015.
Jason lives in Riverview with his wife and three-month-old son.
