It's International Open Access Week (Oct. 22 - 28).
Open Access (OA) is the free, online availability of scholarly research outputs. OA deals primarily with access to peer-reviewed scholarly articles, for which authors receive no financial compensation.
With granting agencies such as SSHRC, NSERC and others increasingly requiring authors to provide public access to their works, OA is a growing movement. And as journal prices rise each year, Open Access publishing provides an alternative.
Besides price, there are other reasons to support Open Access. It benefits the scholarly research community -- students, professors, citizens -- since it makes research knowledge public, enabling scholars to freely gain information, insights and ideas that can lead to new research breakthroughs.
It also helps authors by giving greater exposure to their work and greater control over it.
You can find more about Open Access at our Open Access Guide, including links to OA collections, information on copyright/author rights under OA, and grant-related policies about Open-Access publishing.
