Newshounding: Using Media Techniques to Get & Publicize Government InformationPPT slides from a presentation by librarian Laura Landon at Government Information Days 2024 conference, Dec. 17-19 2024.
Abstract: Journalism and librarianship make good partners, and both professions can learn from each other when it comes to finding and publicizing government information. This session highlighted three journalistic methods librarians can use to obtain unpublished government information: Access to Information processes (and trying to get information without invoking FOI); working the phones; and writing a press release or news story to both pressure governments and to publicize the interesting work librarians do. It showed participants how to frame an issue as a news story and provided an easy-to-follow format for writing a news release that can be published as a journalistic story.
