In the early morning hours of December 16, 1941, a fire broke out in the basement of the men's residence. It claimed the lives of four students, and injured many more. The following slide show brings together some of the archival materials held by the Mount Allison University Archives that document this tragic event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Mount Allison's darkest night.
Archivist Renée Belliveau published a novel about the fire entitled The Sound of Fire (Vagrant Press, Nimbus Publishing, 2021) which is available in the library (call number PS 8603 .E48 S68 2021) and in stores. Signed copies are available from Tidewater Books in Sackville, New Brunswick.
