Also known as "Scholarly", "Peer-Reviewed", "Refereed", or "Academic" Articles 

Magazine Articles
Purpose
  • Provide new research, analysis, or information about a specific topic
  • Entertainment, leisure, news sharing, informational     
Content
  • Written by and reviewed by subject experts
  • Often focused on a narrow subject or a single case study
  • Typically include informational charts, tables, or graphs
  • Usually written in specialized or technical terminology 
  • Include in text citations, foot / end notes, and references 
  • Cover a variety of topics or general interest content
  • Written at general or non-technical language to appeal to a larger audience
  • More likely to include illustrations and images for visual appeal 
  • Many advertisements

Peer Reviewed Articles Characteristics

Key Characteristics

  • Author(s) with academic credentials and is affiliated with a reputable institution (university or research institute)
  • A focus on contributing new or original research in the context of a narrow area of study
  • Technical or discipline-specific language, complex ideas or arguments, an analytical perspective, and an objective point of view
  • Lengthy (usually 5 pages or more) with extensive references, footnotes, or endnotes
  • A plain appearance for the published PDF with minimal colour and design and devoid of advertisements

Other typical elements

  • A date of receipt of the article and a date of publication, indicating the length of the peer review process
  • An abstract summarizing the article, usually found on the front page but occasionally at the very end
  • Structured headings indicating a research study, like Introduction, Purpose, Literature review, Research methods or design, Results or findings, and Conclusion
