MLA Core Elements

Citations are created using a template of core elements* assembled in a particular order with standardized punctuation. MLA uses the concept of "containers" to describe when a source is part of a larger whole. Not every element will be relevant to every citation and a single item may have more than one container

  1. Author.
  2. Title of Source.
  3. Title of Container,
  4. Contributor,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication Date,
  9. Location.
