MUSC 1201: Introduction to Western Art Music History

Finding resources: Reference sources

What is a reference source?

Reference sources can include many different types of materials, but normally what they do is to help provide factual information, broad overviews, or help point you to other helpful resources. Any time you are investigating an unfamiliar topic or looking to answer the who, what, where, when, and why of a question, reference sources are a great place to start!

There are common reference sources that you will find in almost every library, and we have some which are more specialized for music research. Take a look below to compare and think about how you might use each reference source.

Common types of reference sources Specialized reference sources in the Music Library
  • Dictionaries (English and foreign language)
  • Musical dictionaries for terms, genres, or musicians
  • Thesauri
  • Musical bibliographies by instrument, style, country, subject, etc.
  • Encyclopedias
  • Thematic catalogues and bibliographies of individual composers
  • Directories
  • Musical chronologies & discographies

  • Music research and writing guides & citation manuals
Our reference collection can be found on the low shelves in the centre of the Music Library. Like other books, they are organized by call number, and we have some guides to help you browse or you can limit your search in Novanet by using the Location filter to search only the Music Library Reference Collection. These books are normally meant for quick consultation, so they are marked for in-library use only, but if you really need to borrow one, please ask the staff in the Music Library.

Online Reference Sources

Mount Allison only has one major online music reference resource but it's an important one! It is also the one you will be asked to search as part of your MUSC 1201 assignment.

Grove Music Online

Grove Music Online is an authoritative resource for music research with over 51,000 articles written by nearly 9,000 scholars charting the diverse history, theory, and cultures of music around the globe. Grove is often considered the gold standard for music encyclopedias, so it is a great place to look to get background information on a topic.

We also have the full 29 Volume set of the Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians in our reference collection if you would like to search old school, but usually the online searching is quicker and easier.

Grove Music Online and Oxford Music Online are frequently used interchangeably. Searching one or the other is fine, but Grove Music Online is a specific encyclopedia which is part of the platform Oxford Music Online. If you are searching Oxford Music Online, you'll get results from Grove as well as a few other resources.

Because Grove Music Online is an encyclopedia, you can search it and use it to answer questions much in the same way as Wikipedia (except Grove is a scholarly source which can be cited in your assignments, unlike Wikipedia!). If you search for something very specific or obscure, there may not be an article written about it so try broader searching and follow the links within articles to narrow in on more specific articles.
