MUSC 1201: Introduction to Western Art Music History

Tips for your assignment

1. Make sure we actually have full text for articles you find in RILM

  • Taking the extra step of using the 'Find Full-text @ MTA' link is easy, and if you are unsure if we actually have access or not, ask a librarian

2. Copy the bibliographic information for each item for Part 1 of the assignment directly from the source

  • Sometimes library catalogues and databases have errors in the data, so make sure you always look at the original source for your information (i.e., the article PDF, the full ebook, or the physical book or recording on the shelf).
  • If this means an extra trip to the library, that's ok because if it is relevant for your paper you will want to read it anyway

3. Read the abstract and skim the text of the article to make sure it is what you think it is

  • Things other than peer reviewed articles are published in academic journals (this includes opinion pieces, columns, and resource or book reviews).

  • If the item you are reading doesn't seem to match the requirements of a peer reviewed article, it likely isn't a good choice for your assignment or paper. If you aren't sure, ask a librarian!

4. Make sure the resources you choose are relevant to your topic

  • While I'm not grading for how useful the resources are for your topic, you are doing yourself a favour by finding sources you can actually use for your final paper. If you choose something very off-topic, it will lead me to think that you didn't read it before choosing it

Asking for help as part of this assignment isn't cheating and is encouraged! The goal is for you to learn good research fundamentals, so it is important to build good habits early! Those habits include making use of librarians in your research process!
