Dorothy Jane Heartz was born in Montreal, Quebec. She was the daughter of Richard Edgar Heartz (Engineering 1915) and Dorothy Phalen (B.A. 1915).

She entered Mount Allison in the fall of 1941. While in attendance, she served as vice-president of the Class of 1945 and was named Queen of the Ice Carnival in 1943. She earned her B.Sc. with an Engineering Certificate in 1944, becoming the first woman to do so. She continued studies in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University, and in 1946 became the first woman to earn a degree in Engineering from Queen’s. 

She married John William Snook in 1946, and the couple had two sons. She died 18 August 2013 in Truro, Nova Scotia.
