Borrower Information for Students

Borrowing Library Materials (Circulating Items):

Your Mount Allison University Student ID card (or your CAUL card for non-Mount Allison students) is also your Library Card.

The normal loan period for most materials is three weeks. Loan periods are shorter for materials on course reserve (usually two hours or one day), and for maps and certain other materials.

When you borrow items, please note when they are due as they do not always carry a date due slip.

Students may borrow an unlimited number of items at any one time.  The following limits apply:

  • Maximum of five Bell Room or Rare Book items (for in-library use only).
  • Maximum of 10 AV items on cassette, CD, DVD and VHS; maps and theses.
  • Maximum of 15 slide sets.
  • Maximum of 5 kits, LPs and software items.

Please note that all materials are subject to recall.

Renewing Library Materials:

You may renew your books up to three times. There are four ways to renew: online through your Novanet account; in person at the Access Services Department; by e-mail; or by phone by calling 364-2568 (R.P. Bell Library) or 364-2561 (Music Library).

Requesting a Book that is Out:

Your may request an item that someone else has borrowed, or borrow another copy from another Library. Press the "place hold" button in Novanet to begin the process.

For further details, please ask Access Services Department staff at either Library.

Non-Circulating Materials:

Non-circulating materials are for in-library use only. These include reference books, journals, magazines, newspapers, certain government publications, rare books, and the Bell Collection of Acadiana.

Some library materials, such as rare books and special collections, are kept in the Bell Room and the Davidson Room. To access material from these locations, ask a Access Services Department staff member.

Please note that because of the fragile condition of the materials, copies of all material from the Bell Collection and the Rare Book Room must be made by Access Services staff. Photocopying of these materials is permitted within the Canadian copyright guidelines.

Fines:

Please remember to return or renew your library materials before they are due. While the library does not charge late fees on books, it charges replacement costs if a book is overdue for a long period of time. You will receive overdue notices by e-mail reminding you to renew books.

Fines may still accrue for some special items, including course reserves, laptops, and recalled items (items the library needs back for course reserve or another patron, for example).

Course Reserve material:

  • Hourly (less than 1 day) Loans: fine is $2.00/hour or part thereof
  • 1, 2 and 3 Day Loans: fine is $2.00/day

Recalled materials:

  • $1.00/day

Replacement Cost for lost or damaged books:

  • $50.00 (or more depending on cost of item) + $50.00 (processing fee) =
    $100.00 total (minimum)
