In 1886, before automobiles, electricity or telephones were introduced in Sackville, a committee of Mount Allison University students chose the school's colours: "cardinal and old gold." Not long after, the colours garnet and gold were adopted, and teams wearing those colours went on to compete and receive numerous accolades in a wide variety of sports including rugby football, hockey, basketball and track and field.
This website, Three Cheers for Old Mount A!, details the development of a sporting culture that remains important and vital to Mount Allison University today. Allisonians of all ages can take pride in a long and rich heritage in sports.
Contained in this virtual exhibit are over 250 images and 20,000 words detailing the history of sports at Mount Allison from the opening of the school in 1843 to the end of the First World War. In addition, five audio recordings of the Mount Allison Choral Society performing songs and cheers from Mount Allison's past are included in this website, within the topic School Spirit.
This presentation of Three Cheers for Old Mount A! is intended to reflect the many memories of Mount Allison's past that are preserved in old photographs and yellowed scrapbooks held by the University Archives.
