Archival documents almost always contain the names of individuals and are therefore often valuable sources for genealogical and family history. While the terms of this virtual exhibition project have not allowed for either the display of complete fonds and collections or the indexing or transcription of all documents, selected surname indexes have been prepared to assist those seeking evidence of family members in the Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick area.
Readers should note that handwritten documents pose special challenges in the interpretation of spelling, particularly since spelling was not as fixed in the past as it might be today. This problem is magnified in this location where some people of Acadian origins were captured in these documents and the writer of the document might well attempt to render these names in a purely phonetic form. Where we believe a name might be better recognized by a modern spelling we have so indicated by insertion of the name in square brackets following the transcribed name.
